A man is in a stable condition in hospital after he was shot by two masked men outside a restaurant.
The pair approached a 31-year-old man and a woman, 29, as they left the Red Mango restaurant in Tividale, in the Black Country, on Friday.
The victim, from Birmingham, was shot several times in the leg and stomach.
The offenders, wearing dark clothes and "Scream" masks, then fled the scene in a black Audi TT convertible. Police are appealing for witnesses.
The City Road area has been cordoned off. Police said the men drove into nearby Lower City Road and then turned right into Ash Tree Road.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "The motive for this attack remains uncertain. However, at this stage it does not appear to be a random attack.
"While gun crime remains rare this incident is being treated extremely seriously."
