City's second cordon in one day
Forensic tests are being carried out on a suspicious package discovered in Birmingham on Thursday night.

Police were called to a building in New John Street in Newtown where a suspicious package was reported.

A 100m exclusion zone was set up and a number of business premises evacuated. The package was later declared safe.

It was the city's second cordon within 24 hours following the discovery of a suspicious substance in a police raid at Bartley Green on Thursday morning.

Police officers were called to Newtown at 1900 GMT and requested army experts to deal with the package.

The cordon was lifted at midnight when the package was not found to be dangerous.

Forensic tests are being carried out to establish its exact composition.
