New destroyer is linked to city
HMS Daring
HMS Daring being built in Scotland
HMS Daring, the first of the Royal Navy's new Type 45 destroyers, is being launched on Wednesday and is being affiliated to the city of Birmingham.

The city's Lord Mayor and city council leader are in Glasgow to see the ship launch on to the River Clyde.

HMS Birmingham was decommissioned in 1999. Council bosses will hand over a plate which once belonged to the ship for luck.

The Type 45s are set to come into service in 2009.

The Navy says it will be the most advanced warship in the world.

Birmingham's Lord Mayor John Hood said: "It was a great loss to the city when HMS Birmingham was decommissioned so it's wonderful that we're now going to have HMS Daring associated with the city."
