Panel falls from tallest building
Beetham Tower (November 2005)
Five steel plates fell to the ground
Metal panelling which fell off what will be Birmingham's tallest tower caused traffic disruption in the city.

A police spokeswoman said the panels fell off the 39-storey Beetham Tower in Holloway Circus on Thursday.

Traffic was diverted away from the area and on Friday Suffolk Street Queensway and a slip road from Paradise Circus to Holloway Circus remained closed.

The Health and Safety Executive is to investigate. It is the second incident of material falling from the site.

In February roads also had to be closed when scaffolding fell from the site.

The 121.92m (400ft) tall building will house apartments and a hotel.

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said a number of panels fell from the building.

She said officials were on site while emergency crews worked to make sure the site was safe.

She added she was unaware of any injuries.
