A 45-year-old man appeared before magistrates on Wednesday following the death of a medical student in a crash.

Jaswinder Lakhvinder Singh, of Ward End, Birmingham, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Birmingham University student Abigail Craen, 20, was fatally injured in a crash outside her hall of residence in Pershore Road, Edgbaston.

The medical student from Liss, Hampshire, previously attended the Charterhouse public school in Surrey.

Mr Singh, of Ward End Road, is also charged with having no insurance or MOT certificate at the time of the fatal collision on 30 October.

He also faces counts of driving other than in accordance with a licence, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.

Birmingham magistrates refused an application for bail and ordered Mr Singh to appear at the city's crown court on 16 November.

The student died in hospital following the crash.
