Hundreds of people packed St Chad's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Birmingham on Sunday morning to celebrate a Requiem mass for the late Pope.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, conducted the service.
He said afterwards: "Pope John Paul II was a pope who touched many people. He was a father figure for all.
"He had a magical quality and yet he was a fun person as well," the Archbishop said.
