A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder after a shooting outside a hair salon in Birmingham.

Paul Francis, 29, who is from the city, died in the incident in Lozells Road, Newtown, on 27 August, and another man, Nathaniel Ellis, was injured.

The man charged will appear before magistrates in Birmingham on Monday morning, West Midlands Police said.

The shooting happened as thousands of people made their way to nearby Villa Park for a Premiership football match.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said two other men, aged 24 and 39, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, had both been released without charge.

Mr Ellis, 24, was shot in the back and has serious injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.

He is the brother of Charlene Ellis, who was killed outside a New Year party in Aston in 2003.

Four men were found guilty in March of the murders of Charlene and her 17-year-old friend Letisha Shakespeare outside a party at a hair salon in Birchfield Road.
