Three men have been charged with the manslaughter of a Sunday league footballer who was injured after a game in Birmingham.

Thomas Slattery suffered serious head injuries following his first match for St Joseph's against Lozells GMA on 3 April 2005.

The 39-year-old father-of-nine died in Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

Three men, aged 25, 27 and 29, will appear before magistrates in Sutton Coldfield on 31 August.

Mr Slattery was playing against a team from the Lozells area of the city when the fatal incident took place at a leisure centre in College Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham.

He managed his own football club in Erdington and lived at home with six of his children.

The 39-year-old also had three children from a previous relationship.

West Midlands Police said the three men charged were all from the Birmingham area.

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
