Firefighters say a plumber is lucky to have survived after an accident while he was repairing a disabled lavatory.
Paul Sanders, 34, became trapped by the neck face down after accidentally activating a hydraulic toilet seat.
Ambulance crews thought his neck was broken, but X-rays later showed he had suffered only bruising.
Rescuers were called to the property in Jubilee Road, Northfield, on Wednesday after Mr Sanders's workmates heard his screams for help.
The plumber had reached through the lifting frame to fit a waste pipe and accidentally activated it.
'Crush man's skull'
Officers used hydraulic equipment to prise the frame apart before Mr Sanders was taken to hospital and later discharged after treatment.
Station Officer Martyn Price of West Midlands Fire Service said: "The paramedics who turned up were convinced he had a broken neck.
"But fortunately he got away with it. He's very lucky.
"It came all the way down on top of his neck and it's easily powerful enough to crush a man's skull."
