TV service offered to rail users
Central Trains
The service also provides information about delays
A rail operator is giving passengers the chance to watch what they claim is the UK's first on-board television service.

Most Central Trains customers in the Birmingham area can now enjoy a range of news and sports programmes as they make their way to their destinations.

The company said it could extend the 21-inch screens to all its 323 trains.

The system, which relies on satellite technology, also provides information about delays on the network.

'Perfect sense'

A spokeswoman said the televisions had been installed on all of its electric trains and some of its diesel units.

Minister of State for Transport Kim Howells officially launched the service in Birmingham on Tuesday.

"Central Trains are to be congratulated for this initiative which should improve the journey experience for passengers as well as providing them with up-to-date information about their train service," he said.

Managing director Nick Brown said: "People can watch television on other forms of transport, in hospital and even out shopping, so it makes perfect sense to provide this service for our passengers.

"We are the first train company to offer televisions on trains and think it will make a real difference to our passengers."

The company said there would be no additional costs to passengers as a result of the service.
