An intruder armed with a screwdriver dragged a 75-year-old woman from her bed because he was not satisfied with the amount of money in her purse.
West Midlands Police said the attack happened at the victim's home in Barnford Crescent, Oldbury, at about 0300 BST on Sunday.
The offender woke the woman up after breaking in and searching the property.
He refused to believe she had no extra cash and threatened her with the screwdriver for about an hour.
The woman needed hospital treatment for an injury to her hand.
Police said the attacker ripped her phone from the wall and she did not raise the alarm for several hours after he left.
Det Sgt Andy Hesseran said: "We were horrified by this attack.
"Normally a thief seeking cash quickly takes any money and leaves.
"This did not happen in this case and this man subjected his victim to a terrifying ordeal."
The offender is described as black, slim, about 5ft 4ins, aged between 20 and 30 and was wearing a dark leather deerstalker hat.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
