Girl hit by police car loses leg
Sadie Stevens
Sadie Stevens' right leg has been amputated below the knee
An 11-year-old girl run over on a pedestrian crossing by a police car has had her leg amputated.

Sadie Stevens was knocked down by an armed response vehicle on the A34 in Newtown, Birmingham, on 7 February.

Her leg has since been cut off below the right knee by surgeons at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The charity worker Heather Mills McCartney, who also lost a limb when she was run over by a police officer, has sent a message of support to Sadie.

Police inquiry

The wife of Sir Paul McCartney has said she will do all she can to help Sadie.

Mrs Mills McCartney set up the Heather Mills Health Trust after she suffered multiple fractures of the pelvis when she was hit by a police motorcycle answering a 999 call in 1993.

The charity recycles prosthetic limbs.

The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) is to carry out an investigation into the incident in which Sadie was injured.

PCA Member Mehmuda Mian Pritchard, who is supervising the investigation, said: "This is a tragic incident and my sympathies go to Sadie's family.

"I will ensure that a thorough and impartial investigation is carried out.

"I would also like to make an appeal for witnesses and ask anyone who might have seen this incident to come forward and contact West Midlands Police."
