Mourners say farewell to teacher

Hundreds of mourners have paid their respects to a teaching assistant who was killed by a hit-and-run driver outside the school where he worked.

David Evans was knocked down on a zebra crossing outside Shireland Language College in Smethwick last month.

The school closed on Friday so pupils and staff could attend the funeral at St Germain's Church in Edgbaston.

Reverend Hugh Scriven, who conducted the service, said it was an emotional and moving occasion.

Two arrested

Mr Evans, from Edgbaston in Birmingham, was an administrative assistant at the college, where his wife Jane is deputy head.

Mrs Evans appealed to the public to help catch her husband's killer just days after the incident in 19 January.

She said: "His death has left all of our family devastated. Whoever did this has deprived me and my children of a man who was very important in our lives. Our adviser, our counsellor, our refuge in times of difficulty."

Two men, aged 39 and 26, arrested in connection with the incident have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
