The mother of a 26-year-old man who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Birmingham city centre, has made a public appeal to catch the person responsible.

Neil Tyler, from Redditch, was hit by the car as he crossed the Islington Road Middleway, near to Fiveways, at 2335 BST on 12 April.

An inquest into the death of Mr Tyler, who was a fork lift driver, was opened and adjourned on Wednesday.

We just feel totally empty as part of our life has gone

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Tyler's mother Jenny said her family was desperate for the driver to contact police.

"We just feel totally empty as part of our life has gone. That's the only way I can describe it," said Mrs Tyler.

"Neil was a lad who worked hard and enjoyed his life."

She added: "We just need help to find out why the driver drove off and left him."

Handing out leaflets

Inspector Keith Arnold, from West Midlands Police, said: "The area where the accident happened would have been busy with a lot of night-time revellers.

"We have spoken to all his friends and to other people but we also want to speak to anybody else who saw the accident or who has any information about it to contact us."

Police will this weekend be speaking to people in the area around the incident and handing out leaflets in an attempt to trace witnesses.

Anyone who has information should ring 0845 113 5000 and ask for officers at Digbeth police station.
