Pool closed after bacteria found

A council swimming pool on Wearside has been closed as a precaution following the discovery of bacteria.

An inspection of the facility at Washington Leisure Centre revealed a higher than usual level of naturally occurring pseudomonas auruginosa.

Sunderland City Council said it posed a minimum health risk to the public.

However, for public safety reasons the pool was closed while chemical treatments to remove it were carried out. It should reopen at the weekend.

The rest of the leisure centre is operating as normal.
