Masterplan to boost city's future

Sunderland
The masterplan aims to ensure a prosperous future for Sunderland

Residents and companies in Sunderland are being asked what they think is needed to stimulate business and economic growth.

The council has recruited a consortium to develop a 10-year masterplan for the city.

A series of meetings and workshops are planned for the next year, and the results will help guide the development of Sunderland's economy.

The government has given a £190,000 grant towards completing the work.

The council has appointed Leeds-based consultants GENECON to develop the economic masterplan, and regional development agency One North East has a seat on the steering board.

Councillor Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "Like everyone else we are now going through difficult times, but to keep improving we have to look ahead.

"We can guide this development in the future with a masterplan that has studied Sunderland's economy and looks at what is required to ensure a more prosperous future."
