Swimming pool saved for community

A community swimming pool in Durham under threat of closure will remain open, council chiefs have confirmed.

Durham County Council will take over the running of the pool at Wolsingham School and Community College when the current lease runs out in May.

Health bosses are also looking at long-term plans for the sports facility.

Sheila Palmerley, head of children's services, said: "Our priority is to ensure swimming continues for the school and community."

She added: "Leisure services will be part of the new unitary council which opens up great opportunities for the pool.

"Details of the activity programmes and charges are yet to be finalised but we are looking at this now."
