Stab death prompts murder inquiry

A murder investigation is under way following the death of a man found on a street in County Durham.

Anthony Blakelock, 21, from Cook Crescent in Murton was found by police fatally stabbed in the Barnes Road area of the town on Saturday.

He was taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal hospital where he died.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion on murder. Officers will carry out house-to-house inquiries as part of the investigation.

The area where the incident took place was cordoned off to allow a forensic examination to be carried out.

Ch Insp Darren Ellis, leading the investigation, said: "We believe in this case the people involved were known to each other.

"While I appreciate local residents will naturally be concerned by what has happened, we have no reason at this stage to think this is part of any trend or pattern."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Peterlee police.
