Armed robbers target betting shop

Two masked men armed with a knife ran off empty-handed after being confronted by a customer in a Wearside bookmakers.

The attempted robbery happened on Saturday when the men targeted William Hill's betting shop in Chiswick Square Hylton Castle, in Sunderland.

The robbers threatened staff and demanded cash. But they ran off empty-handed when they were confronted by a male customer, police said.

He suffered a minor head injury during the confrontation.
