'Axe' attack victim hit in head

A man suffered serious head injuries in what police believe was a street attack involving an axe.

Police were called to Somerset Street in Silksworth, Sunderland, on Saturday night after reports that a man was in the street armed with an axe.

They arrived to find a 28-year-old man with serious head injuries.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding and is in police custody. Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
