Driver charged over 'hit-and-run'

A County Durham driver has been charged with attempted murder after two women were hurt when they were struck in an alleged hit-and-run crash.

The women, aged 19 and 59, were injured when a car mounted a pavement in High Street, Houghton-le-Spring hitting them then reversing over them, police said.

Ian Scott, 42, of Windsor Terrace, Haswell, has been charged with attempted murder and assault.

Both women suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old suffered head injuries, a broken leg and a fractured pelvis, while the older woman suffered head injuries and a broken leg.

Mr Scott will appear before Houghton-le-Spring magistrates on Monday.
