Arrest over armed raid at store

A 19-year-old man has been arrested after an attempted robbery at a newsagents in Sunderland.

Police said a man walked into Newcastle Road News and threatened staff with a knife on Monday night.

But he fled the shop empty-handed when the shopkeeper refused to hand over money from the till.

The man then threatened members of the public and a knife was later found. A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in Church Road North.
