Explosion rocks petrol forecourt

Police are treating an explosion on the forecourt of a County Durham petrol station as suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the Total garage off the A693 in Annfield Plain early on Wednesday.

The engine room of the car wash was found well alight, but crews prevented the flames spreading to the adjacent garage shop.

The machinery room was extensively damaged. The petrol station is closed to allow police forensic examinations.
