Animals killed in allotment blaze

A large number of animals, including pigs and horses, have been killed in a fire in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at a small-holding on Good Street Estate in Tanfield Lea, near Stanley, early on Saturday.

Nineteen pigs died in the fire, or were put down by vets afterwards, with just one animal surviving. The toll also included two horses and eight rabbits.

A joint investigation by police and the fire service is now under way.
