Bike teams will tackle known hot spot areas

Firefighters in County Durham are taking to two wheels in an effort to combat arson attacks.

The County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service have launched a Bicycle Arson Reduction Team (BART) to tackle known trouble spots.

The brigade says the bikes will enable officers to access difficult areas.

The team will concentrate on hot spot areas in Durham City and Chester-le-Street, where arson reports have increased recently.

Brigade spokesman Keith Wanley said: "The Easter holiday period is traditionally a busy period for the service in relation to deliberate fires."
