Motorway closed by downed cable
A stretch of the A1M in north-east England was closed on Wednesday night after a power cable came down in a nearby field.

The closure affected the motorway between junctions 59 and 60, near Darlington, for about an hour at 2000 GMT, said the Highways Agency.

It is not known what brought the 22,000 volt cable down, but high winds have hit the region throughout Wednesday.

The motorway was closed to allow access to specialist repair vehicles.

Diversions were in place for the duration of the closure, said a Highways Agency spokesman.

He added that the cable posed no risk to motorists.
