Top artists to create masterpiece
Sunderland Aquatic Centre
The aquatic centre is due to open in the spring
Four artists have been invited to create an artwork for Sunderland's new 20m aquatic centre.

The city council has tasked the artists to create a bold and modern art feature to replace security fencing around two gas vents.

The aquatic centre, which is expected to open in the spring of 2008, will house a 50-metre pool, diving pool and wellness centre.

The winning artwork is due to be unveiled in the autumn.

The invited artists are Walter Jack from Bristol, Bruce Williams from Brighton, Tejo Remy and Rene Veenhuizen - both from Holland.

Councillor Mel Speding, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: "This exciting project will add to the appeal of Sunderland's stunning new aquatic centre.

"The artwork is part of Sunderland's ambitious programme of public art commissions."
