Art installation for city theatre
Sunderland Empire
The theatre's flytower is a prominent city feature
Plans have been revealed for a major new artwork to be installed at one of the North East's oldest theatres.

The 100-year-old Sunderland Empire has shortlisted four possible projects to be installed on the theatre's flytower.

Schemes by designer Sam Buxton, sculptor Simeon Nelson, architects Tonkin Liu and interior designers Timorous Beasties are being considered.

Local people are being encouraged to view models of the projects at the city's library and arts centre.

The city council-owned theatre's flytower is a prominent feature on the city centre skyline.

Mel Speding, the council's cabinet member for culture and leisure, said he wanted as many people as possible to give their views on the proposals.

He added: "This is just the start of an exciting programme of public art commissions, which will create a quality environment and further boost Sunderland's reputation as a great place to live, work and visit."
