Town's anti-flood scheme unveiled

A £100,000 flood defence scheme designed to protect a County Durham residential estate has been completed.

The Environment Agency has built a 230m flood bank and 50m floodwall at The Parks in Chester-le-Street, on a large meander of the River Wear.

Subtle changes in river level have increased the risk of flooding, said the agency.

The scheme was designed in consultation with residents and Chester-le-Street District Council.

The project also includes the creation of a wildlife area to encourage flora and fauna to grow.

David Huntington, project manager at the Environment Agency, said: "The scheme has been very well received by local residents.

"The new wildlife area, which was previously scrub land, creates another location for the public to enjoy, with the knowledge that their homes have a better level of protection from flooding."
