A man arrested in connection with a crash in which a mother died has been charged by police.

The 26-year-old was detained after the death of Paula Stead, 32, who was struck by a Jeep Cherokee in St Luke's Road, Sunderland, on Thursday.

He is accused of a number of offences, including causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The unnamed man is due before magistrates in Sunderland.

He also faces charges of driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to report an accident.

Mrs Stead's daughter Bridie, 11, was also hurt in the incident, along with Danica Green, the 10-year-old daughter of her cousin.

The two girls have had surgery and are still in hospital.
