Police investigating the disappearance of a County Durham man are carrying out a search of a house in Sacriston.

Edward Donnelly, 56, went missing from the home he shared with his sister in Fynway on 25 March 2002.

Since then, police have been unable to trace him and he has made no contact with his family.

Police said on Friday that, acting on information received, officers are searching a house in Elm Street and samples have been sent for analysis.

Det Ch Insp Geoff Watson of Durham Police said: "Having received information we were obliged to act on it.

"At this stage we are keep an open mind with regard to his disappearance. It is coming up to the anniversary of him being reported missing and while we hope he is somewhere alive and well, his family have not heard from him in that time.

"We are still actively investigating his disappearance and urge anyone with information to come forward with the knowledge it will be treated in confidence."

A Sacriston man has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and bailed pending results of the forensic tests.
