Snow death nurse's bag discovered
Shelley Whitfield
Shelley Whitfield's body was found face down in the snow
Police say they have found a bag belonging to Shelley Whitfield, the young nurse found dead in Durham.

The 21-year-old's fully-clothed body was found face down in the snow behind Meadowfield sports centre in Brandon on Wednesday morning.

Detectives had launched an appeal to help trace her light-coloured clutch bag, which she had been seen with while window shopping in Durham on Tuesday.

It was discovered in fields at the rear of the sports centre.

Police say Miss Whitfield may have missed her bus stop and tried to walk home in freezing weather on Tuesday evening.

Forensic analysis

She spent Tuesday afternoon in Durham with a male friend, where she stopped for a meal and drinks in a pub - The Water House - then walked to the bus station.

Her friend caught a bus to Washington, and a woman matching Miss Whitfield's description caught another bus, but missed her stop and left the bus at a subsequent stop.

Her movements after that time, 1830 GMT, are unknown.

A post-mortem test failed to establish the cause of death but officers have sent samples away for forensic analysis.
