Toppled crane recovery suspended
Crane collapse
The collapse of the crane caused a gas leak
Further attempts to remove a 60-tonne crane which crashed into a house in Sunderland have had to be suspended.

The crane was delivering a hot tub to the back garden of the house in Coniston Avenue, in Fulwell, on Friday when it smashed through the roof.

People were evacuated from nearby homes after it ruptured a gas main.

The first attempt at recovery was called off on Saturday afternoon, when a second crane brought to lift it was found to be too small.

Emergency services tried again with a larger crane in the early hours of Sunday but had to suspend that operation when train services resumed on a nearby Metro line.

The crane has now been secured and recovery work will continue on Sunday night, once Metro services have ended.
