Search for 'victim' called off
Police have called off their search for a man feared to have been seriously assaulted in County Durham.

The hunt was sparked after a woman, covered in blood, flagged down a car at 0200 BST on Monday, in Leadgate, claiming she had carried out an attack.

The 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault but Durham Police say, despite an extensive search, they could not find a victim.

The woman has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Andy Reddick said the incident remained a "mystery."

Answer her bail

He said: "It would be fair to say we are dealing with something of mystery as no-one has come forward saying they were attacked."

Police say the woman flagged down a car and later a taxi at the Jolly Drovers roundabout in Leadgate.

She was later arrested at a house in Reynolds Close, Stanley.

She told police she had been in Trades nightclub on Sunday night.

She must answer bail in six weeks' time.
