Man 'almost loses eye' in attack
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was injured and almost lost an eye, during a late-night attack in Newcastle on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was drinking in the Jingling Gate pub on Stamfordham Road when five young men entered.

Staff refused to serve them because it was after hours and the victim helped female bar staff to eject them.

After he left he was attacked by one of the gang, which had armed itself with sticks from nearby trees.

'Gave chase'

Northumbria Police said the victim suffered a serious facial wound, almost losing an eye, and needed stitches to a gashed cheek.

The assault on the man, and a friend he had been drinking with, took place at the junction of Stamfordham Road and Hillhead Road.

Afterwards the gang gave chase as the men ran back to the pub seeking help

Group members are described as being in their late teens and police are asking anyone who witnessed the assault, or saw them before or after the incident, to contact them.
