Sunday charges for city car parks
Car parks in Newcastle City Centre are to charge a flat rate of 1 for off-street parking on Sundays.

The charges will apply to some car parks which used to be free, but others which once charged 1.30 per hour will now cost 1 for the whole day.

About 5,500 spaces are available at the new Sunday rate.

Cindy Balderston, general manager of Eldon Garden Shopping Centre, welcomed the move, saying it would help Sunday trading reach its full potential.

Car parks taking part in the scheme include Eldon Square, Eldon Garden and Dean Street.

Councillor Wendy Taylor, executive member for environment, sustainability and transport at Newcastle City Council, said: "The majority of traders in the city centre are fully in favour of the nominal charge.

"Many city and town centres now charge for parking on Sundays, and I am sure many others will follow as Sunday become more and more like any other trading day."
