Mother remanded over baby murder in North Tyneside

A mother has appeared in court accused of murdering her baby son whose body was found in a flat on North Tyneside.

Mapaseka Justinah Shapung, 30, from Lesotho, southern Africa, is alleged to have killed 11-month-old Themba Bevin with a massive dose of painkillers.

The boy's body was found in Ms Shapung's flat in George Stephenson Way, North Shields, on New Year's Day.

She entered no plea at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court and is due at Newcastle Crown Court later in January.

Prosecutor Laurie Hind made no application for bail and Ms Shapung was remanded into custody.
