Warning over tax repayment scam

People in Northumberland have been warned to be on their guard against what council officials have described as an unscrupulous scam.

Members of the public have reported being telephoned by someone claiming to work for the council and told they were due a council tax refund.

Others have been told that under a new government scheme they are eligible for a council tax band reduction.

The caller then requests bank details so the repayment can be made.

A spokesperson from Northumberland County Council said: "Please be vigilant and if you have elderly relatives or neighbours, please alert them too.

"This is an unscrupulous scam carried out in the hope of deceiving vulnerable or unsuspecting residents.

"If you are in doubt, no matter how convincing the caller may be, hang up and refer the matter to the police."
