Second death after ravine crash

A second man has died after a car with four people inside plunged 30ft (9m) down a ravine in North Tyneside.

A 20-year-old died shortly after the Volkswagen Golf left the road at New Hartley, near Whitley Bay, on Thursday.

Northumbria Police said a second man, aged 24, died in Newcastle General Hospital on Saturday from injuries sustained in the crash.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing death by careless driving pending inquiries.

Another man who was in the car is being treated for serious injuries in hospital.

The scene of the crash is a straight stretch of road between two bends.

Northumbria Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.
