A rescue operation was launched after a motorist lost control of his car and ended up in a Northumberland river.

The man, in his 40s, managed to escape from the Vauxhall Corsa when it plunged into the River Blyth at Cambois on Tuesday night.

Police, paramedics, and a crew from the town's RNLI station attended, but the man was not seriously hurt.

A passenger in the vehicle, in his early 20s, managed to jump clear before the car hit the water.

It happened near the Seven Stars Jetty at about 2000 BST.

The vehicle has since been recovered from the river.
