Ark Royal welcomes public onboard

HMS Ark Royal, berthed in North Tyneside for its 30th birthday, has been welcoming visitors.

The 20,000-tonne aircraft carrier built on the Tyne 30 years ago is at Northumbria Quay in North Shields for a five-day visit.

The Royal Navy's flagship vessel had its keel first laid down at the Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend.

The warship opened to the public on Saturday with a family day for crew members on Sunday.

On board, there will be a Sea King Asac helicopter of 849 Naval Air Squadron and a Merlin NH Mk1 helicopter of 814 Naval Air Squadron.

It is the second time it has visited Tyneside in 12 months.
