A draft report into the floods which devastated a Northumberland town has called for better communications by the agencies which respond to flooding.

More than 1,000 properties in Morpeth were affected when the River Wansbeck broke its banks in September.

The independent report also said the Environment Agency should improve its warning system for threatened homes.

Castle Morpeth Borough Council's Peter Jackson said people "should remember the speed at which the water came up".

"The report broadly outlines the successful efforts of the multi-agency response in the wake of the flood," said the council leader.
