Work to improve Angel site begins

Work is due to begin on improving safety and facilities at the site of the Angel of the North in Gateshead.

New paths, off-road parking, a coach park and toilets will be built during the work, which begins on Wednesday.

The facilities have been designed to make sure they are in tune with the iconic structure and will not be visible from the Angel site.

The work is expected to be completed by April and minor delays due to lane closures are expected on the A167.

Linda Green, from Gateshead Council, said: "We have been concerned for some time about the potential danger posed by parking on the side of what is sometimes a very busy road.

"Our creation of these new visitor facilities will remove those concerns and will make the whole experience of visiting the Angel so much more pleasurable."
