The CCTV industry in the UK has a turnover of 600m a year

Surveillance experts from all over the country are in Newcastle looking at ways of using the technology to fight crime and anti-social behaviour.

It is thought there are over 1.5m public space CCTV cameras in operation in Britain.

Safe Newcastle, which is co-hosting the conference on Tuesday, has championed the use of CCTV to help cut crime.

A spokesman from the group said it had introduced 30 mobile cameras to augment fixed CCTV across the city.

The event will look at the greater co-ordination of CCTV systems between various operators, better use of cameras and the long-term development and strategic use of surveillance equipment.

Over 50 exhibitors are showcasing the latest technology and equipment used in surveillance operations at the Gosforth Park Marriott Hotel in Newcastle.
