King of Norway honoured by city

King Harald has an honorary doctorate from Newcastle University

The king of Norway is to be granted one of Tyneside's highest honours.

King Harald V of Norway will be awarded the Honorary Freedom of Newcastle during a visit to highlight the links between the region and his country.

Thursday's ceremony will also mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of Newcastle Civic Centre by his father, King Olav V, on 14 November 1968.

Previous recipients of the award include Nelson Mandela, Sir Bobby Robson, and Northern Rock.

During the ceremony His Majesty will be invited to sign the honours register which dates back to the 1800s.

His award also marks the the historic, cultural and economic links Newcastle enjoys with the people of Norway.

Councillor David Wood, Lord Mayor of Newcastle, said: "I am delighted His Majesty has accepted the Honorary Freedom of Newcastle, a title which was also received by his father almost 40 years ago to the day.

"I know the people of Newcastle will give His Majesty a warm welcome during his visit to our region which will also celebrate our long lasting friendship."
