Elderly need more help to get out

Elderly people in the North East should be asked what they need to help improve their transport options.

Research from Newcastle University claims a "one-size-fits-all" approach does not work and different areas need different services.

Dr Jenny Brake says living in the city can be as much of a problem as living in rural areas.

She says better communication and information on services is needed to help elderly people get out.

Dr Brake said: "We should be asking people what they need. This will vary from county to county, between cities and even within cities.

"Local authorities and operators can then decide how best to use their resources."

She said designated taxis and buses running in the North East for elderly people were heading in the direction but more could be done.
