Arrests in drugs raids in Northumberland

Nine people have been arrested on suspicion of drug dealing in a series of dawn raids in north Northumberland.

About 80 Northumbria Police officers targeted five addresses in Berwick-upon-Tweed as part of an inquiry into the town's heroin supply.

Seven men and two women are being questioned at police stations across the county.

The arrests follow a six-month operation also involving Lothian and Borders Police and Berwick Council.

Northumbria Police Ch Supt Kevin Lambert said: "These raids directly targeted the small number of people in Berwick who bring misery to others through their involvement with drugs.

"Berwick rightly has a reputation as a safe, low crime area and a popular holiday resort. We will not let the activity of a few individuals taint this.

"This intelligence-led operation was carried out with the help of the community and we would urge them to continue to be vigilant."
