Toddler dies in holiday pool fall

A British toddler has died after falling into a swimming pool at a holiday resort in Turkey, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The two-year-old girl, named locally as Lucy Cardwell, from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, was on holiday in Dalyan.

Turkish news reports claimed she died in hospital on Friday, two days after the accident.

Last March, her 15-year-old uncle, Daniel Cardwell, drowned while swimming in a lake at a Tyneside nature reserve.

The teenager had been drinking with friends at Marden Quarry.

Lucy's family is expected to remain in Turkey for the next few days.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national minor in Turkey on 18 July.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family."
