MetroCentre celebrates crime fall

MetroCentre
MetroCentre has its own on-site police unit

Crime at one of Europe's largest shopping centres has been falling for more than a year.

The month on month reduction at Gateshead's MetroCentre has been put down to a strong partnership between police, security and traders.

The centre has a fully operational on-site police unit with more than ten staff working from the Blue Mall.

There are also three Special Constables who patrol with Neighbourhood Beat Managers each weekend.

Neighbourhood Sgt Alan Parks said: "We're continually building on initiatives which help make the centre a safe and reassuring place to visit.

"This continuous reduction is testament to the excellent working relationships we have at the centre."
