No future for floating nightclub
Tuxedo Princess and Tyne Bridge

A multi-million pound quayside development in Gateshead will mean the end of an era for one of Tyneside's best-known entertainment landmarks.

The floating nightclub Tuxedo Princess has been an iconic backdrop to the River Tyne for almost 25 years.

But it is now out of favour with council bosses, who are focussing more on family entertainment and the arts.

Owners Absolute Leisure now plan to move the vessel out of the region and build a £10m office complex.

'Prestige projects'

Plans for Princess Quay, where the vessel, known locally as "the boat" is currently berthed, are being put before Gateshead Council.

The scheme, designed by architects Ryder, has involved consultation with Gateshead Council and English Heritage.

The ambitious project is part of Absolute Leisure's diversification into new areas.

Tony Knox, managing director of Absolute Leisure, said: "Although we will always operate leisure venues, we are also investing into prestige landmark projects, which show our confidence in the local economy."

The Tuxedo Princess has had a chequered past. In 2005 it came close to losing its licence, amid police concerns over persistent violence and disorder.
